Neste improves plastics recycling capacity at the Porvoo Refinery in Finland

Neste is strengthening its logistics infrastructure at the Porvoo Refinery in Finland to accommodate more quantities of liquefied recycled raw materials, such as waste plastics and rubber tyres. The expansion is a key step in supporting Neste's strategic goals of advancing chemical recycling and transforming the Porvoo Refinery into a centre for renewable and recycling solutions. By enhancing its ability to process larger quantities of these materials, Neste is playing a key role in the transition to more sustainable production processes.

Neste improves plastics recycling capacity at the Porvoo Refinery in Finland

The new logistics facility at the Neste Porvoo Refinery includes a specialized unloading facility for the treatment of liquefied recovered materials. At the refinery's port, Neste is building a discharge arm equipped with a heating system to keep materials like waste plastics and rubber tires flowing, which require heat to stay liquid. In addition, pipelines will connect the port to specialized storage tanks that are designed for greater corrosion resistance. Neste has also installed steam recovery units to enhance emissions control during operation to ensure compliance with environmental requirements.

The new logistics infrastructure for Neste's Porvoo Refinery is expected to be completed by the 2024. The timing coincides with Neste's ongoing construction of the liquid waste plastics upgrade unit, which is part of the PULSE project and is scheduled for completion in 2025. Once operational, the upgrades will convert the liquefied recycled materials into high-quality raw materials for the plastics and chemical industries. This expanded infrastructure and new upgrade unit will play a critical role in supporting Neste's strategic objectives of advancing chemical recycling and promoting recycling solutions. Jori Sahlsten, senior vice president of refinery and terminal operations at Neste's Porvoo Refinery, stressed that turning refineries into the centre of renewable and recycling solutions is a complex process involving multiple steps and adjustments. An important step is the development of a new logistics infrastructure that will enable refineries to process larger and more continuous liquefied recovered feedstocks. This infrastructure is critical to support the new upgrading unit, which will have the capacity to process 150,000 tons of liquid waste plastics per year, in line with Neste's commitment to sustainability and innovation. Neste is a global leader in sustainable fuels and recycled materials. Using advanced technologies, we are turning waste and other resources into renewable solutions and promoting decarbonisation and circular economy schemes. As the world's leading producer of sustainable jet fuel and renewable diesel, we are also a pioneer in developing renewable feedstocks for polymers and chemicals. Our goal is to help our clients significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future.
